Reception (2023-24)

Hello and welcome to our Reception class page!

Welcome back everyone! We hope that you all had a wonderful Easter holiday, and a well-deserved rest. We are looking forward to our new half-term and our exciting new topic!

This half-term, our new topic will be ‘Animals and Living Things.’ Throughout this topic, we will be learning all about the different types of animals and living things in our world, such as pets, minibeasts, farm animals and wild animals. We will also be looking at the life cycles of some animals, including frogs and butterflies (we will even have our own caterpillars that we will observe)! We are excited to welcome special visitors into our classroom too, such as tortoises and chickens! As well as this, we will be learning about many other living things on our planet, including plants, flowers and trees. We are also very excited to be going on our school trip to Chatsworth farmyard this half-term, where we will deepen our knowledge further on animal habitats.

In Literacy, we will be reading a range of fiction and non-fiction texts based around our topic. We will continue to develop our writing skills by writing short sentences using our phonetic knowledge. We will also teach lots of new vocabulary this half-term, based on our topic, to help with our writing and communication skills. In Phonics, we will be recapping all the sounds that we have learnt so far, and using these to read and spell longer words and sentences. We will also be spending lots of time practising our reading and writing of more Tricky Words.

In Maths, we will be beginning to explore numbers beyond 10 in detail. We will learn how to recognise, order and represent these numbers using Numicon, ten frames and Multi-link. We will continue to practise our number bonds to 5/10, recap and rehearse our doubling and odd and even facts, and we will also continue to learn how to write addition/subtraction number sentences using various different strategies and resources.

Keep checking Tapestry for more details and information about our learning each week!
