Physical Education

Our Physical Education Subject Leader is: Mr Robinson

Intent

It is our intention to build an ambitious PE curriculum that enables children to develop knowledge, skills and vocabulary in a broad range of sporting activities, as well as developing values and transferrable life skills such as fairness and respect. We aim to develop health, physical fitness and emotional wellbeing for all pupils. Our children will have a range of opportunities to compete in sport and other activities that build character and embed our core values of ‘respect, resilience and responsibility’.

Implementation

Our PE curriculum is based on the Early Years Framework and the National Curriculum. The subject leaders have created progression documents from reception to Year 6. These progression documents have been planned in order to build on the skills needed to meet the end of KS objectives in the National Curriculum.

Our long term plan is broad and balanced, allowing children to access a wide variety of high quality PE and sports provision. The long term plan begins by focussing on the fundamental skills and then moving onto skills and activities that can lead to different sports. Further up school, we start making the links between sports and finally in Years 5 and 6, it becomes more sport specific as we get them ready for high school. Children are given plenty of opportunities to build upon prior knowledge, allowing children to know more, and remember more. Children are given plenty of opportunities to take part in competitive sports throughout the year across Key Stage 2. We aim for all pupils to develop a healthy life style, a balanced diet, positive growth mind-set and the resilience to persevere with activities that may be once have felt too difficult. Children are taught about self-discipline and that to be successful you need to take ownership and responsibility of their own health and fitness. We are passionate about the need to teach children how to cooperate and collaborate with others, as part of a team, understanding fairness and equity of play to embed life-long values. In addition, inclusive sports clubs and teams are used to supplement our PE provision and provide a platform for elitist competition.

We use PE Passport in order to structure progression, assess and develop teacher’s CPD. Teachers are encouraged to use this, alongside their professional judgement when planning their lessons.

Impact

Our impact is to motivate children to utilise their sporting skills, values and disciplines PE promotes in an independent and effective way in order to live happy and healthy lives. At DIsley, we provide opportunities for children to become physically confident in a way which supports their physical and emotional health and fitness. Opportunities to compete in sport and other activities build character and help to embed values such as fairness and respect.
